Biochar is often described as
“black carbon” or “charcoal for soil.” But this simple description misses its
real value. Biochar is not a fertilizer, not compost, and not a quick fix. It
is a long-term soil conditioner that works with biology, not instead of it.

What Exactly Is Biochar?
Biochar is produced by heating
biomass (crop residues, wood waste, husks) in low or no oxygen conditions
(pyrolysis). This process locks carbon into a stable form that can remain in
soil for hundreds of years.
Unlike compost, biochar does not
decompose quickly. Its power lies in structure, not nutrients.
Why Biochar Matters for Organic

Biochar acts like a habitat for
soil microbes. Its porous structure:
